I won a pun-based competition!

Posted by on Nov 1, 2015 in News | 0 comments

Exciting news that is (very loosely) related to this site: I won a pun-based competition! Not for any puns in Gagged and Bound, though. No, this was for my day job, because as well as writing the odd joke book, I also run a proofreading business called Full Proof, and we have just won the Britain’s Best Business Name award!

Here’s me with my giant cheque for £1,000. I’ve always wanted a giant cheque, too!

Nick Jones Best Business Name Competition

There were some cracking pun-based business names in the final shortlist, so I had to work hard to get enough votes to win. Here are the other nominees:

Bill’s Gates

Jason Donervan

Making You Content

Mud, Sweat and Gears

Farther Treads

Spruce Springclean

Surelock Homes

The Hip-Hop Chip Shop

Tree Wise Men

The competition was run by London-based company Make It Cheaper, and their Marketing Executive James McAllister came to visit me for photos and an interview. James had this to say:

“Firstly, a massive congratulations to Nick on winning. It’s important for small businesses owners to put serious thought into their business names. As far as marketing tools go, your business’s name is one of the most simple, yet most powerful that you have at your disposal. Nick has turned a memorable business name into some really strong branding across the whole of the Full Media group, and I have no doubt for his success in the future.”

Happy days! 🙂

Joke competition winner and runners-up announced!

Posted by on Mar 18, 2015 in News | 1 comment

Joke competition winner

Thanks to everyone who took the time to enter this competition. There were 636 entries in total, and many of the jokes were excellent, so it’s taken a long time to whittle it down to five runners-up and one winner. But without further ado, the winning entry was this one sent in by Debbie Gillespie:

A man loses his dog, so he puts an ad in the paper. And the ad says, ‘Here, boy!’

Congratulations, Debbie! A Kindle Fire HD6 and a paperback copy of my book Gagged and Bound will be sent out to you shortly. You’ll also receive Gagged and Bound 2 when it’s released in a few weeks’ time.

The five runners-up, who will each receive a copy of Gagged and Bound, are (in no particular order):

A man walks into a pharmacy and asks, ‘Have you got anything for laryngitis?’ The pharmacist looks up and says, ‘Good morning sir, how can I help you?’ (Sent in by Guy Elliott)

What happened to the man who was listening to the match? He burnt his ear. (Sent in by Jenny Jones)

Why do seagulls fly over the sea? Because if they flew over the bay they would be bagels. (Sent in by Jill Boots)

Wee Johnny is drawing a picture in class.
‘What you drawing, Johnny?’ asks the teacher.
‘God,’ Johnny replies.
‘But no one knows what God looks like, Johnny,” says the teacher.
Well they will in a minute,’ Johnny replies. (Sent in by Robert Mcintyre)

Why do men need so many sperm? Because they will not ask the way! (Sent in by Valerie Baker)

The winner and runners-up have been emailed and will receive their prizes shortly. Thanks again to everyone who entered. I’ll run another competition like this in a few months as it’s proven so popular.

Gagged and Bound in the news!

Nick Jones Gagged and Bound

Well, what an exciting week it’s been for me! On Thursday, the Congleton Chronicle ran a feature on my mission to raise cash for Comic Relief through sales of Gagged and Bound. The write-up was great and had already led to an increase in sales, plus I’ve already been recognised by the staff in the local post office (who seemed to take great pleasure in pointing out that I looked fatter in the photo than in real life). A big thanks to the lovely people at the Chronicle for this additional exposure.

And as if that wasn’t enough, I went to a comedy night at the Lion and Swan in Congleton last night and was approached at the end by a Gagged and Bound fan, Joe, who recognised me from the paper. He said he loved the book and will definitely be buying the next one. Thanks, Joe – you made my day!

If you’re reading this and haven’t picked up a copy of my joke book yet, now is the time to do so, as all profits go to Comic Relief up until Red Nose Day on March 13. Published by Full Media Ltd, the book has been a frequent best-seller under the Puns & Wordplay category on Amazon.
